She Got Even

Lyrics

"She Got Even"
Music & Lyrics by Scott Cooley.

My girlfriend and my ex got together one night

I thought for sure it would turn out to be a cat fight

Instead they started drinkin’ and comparin’ notes

Yours truly, the subject and my infamous quotes

Soon she discovered I’d used the same lines on ‘em both

And gave ‘em each the same exact love letters that I’d wrote

I told her I’d been faithful, that the ex and I were through

But she learned I’d had my cake and I’d been eatin’ it too

I did some bad things, some lyin’ and some cheatin’

I’ve got to admit I deserved to get a beatin’

I thought she’d get upset, and maybe she’d be leavin’

She coulda got mad, but oh no, she got even

I apologized, and to my surprise, she said she’d accept

Incredibly, she said that she’d forgive and forget

She threw a big party, even baked me a cake

Served me with a smile that I soon found out was fake

Later I realized my piece was more than just a snack

It had a secret ingredient – a whole box of ex-lax

She treated me like a king, then I spent the whole night on the throne

The next day I prayed to God she’d never come back home

I did some bad things, some lyin’ and some cheatin’

I’ve got to admit I deserved to get a beatin’

I thought she’d get upset, and maybe she’d be leavin’

She coulda got mad, but oh no, she got even

I did some bad things, some lyin’ and some cheatin’

I’ve got to admit I deserved to get a beatin’

I thought she’d get upset, and maybe she’d be leavin’

She coulda got mad, but oh no, she got even

Brief Description

Believe it or not, this is based on a true story that actually happened to me.  It's one of those memories that keeps getting more funny the older I get, but at the time was painful in more ways than one.  To my knowledge, this is the only song I know of that is about such a subject, although I wouldn't be surprised if there's some comedy/novelty song out there by someone like Weird Al Yankovic that is as well.  In polite society this wouldn't be an appropriate topic, but by comparison it's nowhere near as nasty as what they get away with in rap music these days.  I thought this had a country-ish feel to it, but one reviewer thought it had a Caribbean vibe, so go figure.  Also of note, this is the first SC recording to feature the instrument people just can't seem to get enough of - the cowbell.
