Happy Go Lucky

Lyrics

"Happy Go Lucky"
Music & Lyrics by Scott Cooley.

His name is Lucky, and he was born to retrieve

He’ll catch whatever you toss, he never wants you to leave

He’ll bring a tennis ball to greet you at the door

You might think he’s just a dog, but to him he’s so much more

He’s a squirrel hunter in his heart and his mind

He’s been inches away about a thousand times

He sits patiently for hours underneath that tree

Hoping one will come down and end up in his teeth

In his dreams he’s caught a million, shakin’ ‘em ‘till they’re dead

Which must be why he spends so much time asleep in his bed

We know he’ll never give up, even in the snow

And he’ll never let it get him down, even though he’s just too slow

That’s why we call him Happy Go

It’s true he’s a lucky dog, he’s really got it made

He’s the ruler of the backyard, no work and all play

He could easily lead the blind or be the best in show

But if he could choose a job, he’d be a squirrel hunting pro

He’s a squirrel hunter in his heart and his mind

He’s been inches away about a thousand times

He sits patiently for hours underneath that tree

Hoping one will come down and end up in his teeth

In his dreams he’s caught a million, shakin’ ‘em ‘till they’re dead

Which must be why he spends so much time asleep in his bed

We know he’ll never give up, even in the snow

And he’ll never let it get him down, even though he’s just too slow

That’s why we call him Happy Go

And although it’s sad to think about, someday his life will end

He’ll be off to doggy heaven, and no longer my best friend

But I’d like to think he’ll still be happy long after he’s deceased

With an extra burst of Godspeed, on squirrels he’ll forever feast

He’s a squirrel hunter in his heart and his mind

He’s been inches away about a thousand times

He sits patiently for hours underneath that tree

Hoping one will come down and end up in his teeth

In his dreams he’s caught a million, shakin’ ‘em ‘till they’re dead

Which must be why he spends so much time asleep in his bed

We know he’ll never give up, even in the snow

And he’ll never let it get him down, even though he’s just too slow

That’s why we call him Happy Go

Brief Description

Happy Go Lucky is about my dog Lucky, a golden retriever who is the greatest dog to ever walk the earth.  My wife kept bugging me to write a song about our dog, so I finally did.  Most people can relate to watching a dog try to catch a squirrel.  Most dogs rarely catch one, so you figure if there's a doggy heaven, when they're there they always get their squirrel.
